Heading into Saturday’s contest against Michigan State, Penn State had never won a shootout in program history.
But after a Ricky DeRosa goal and a trio of saves by Eamon McAdam, the Nittany Lions left East Lansing, Michigan with a win in the skills competition and five of a possible six points in the Big Ten standings.
While the game officially ended as a 2-2 tie, the Lions (18-8-4, 8-5-1-0 Big Ten) picked up the extra point over the Spartans (7-20-3, 3-10-0-1) by virtue of the shootout win.
Entering the third period, it appeared the Lions would have to settle for a series split with the Spartans.
