Penn State field hockey falls to Michigan in Big Ten Championship | What you need to know

The state of Michigan was not too kind to Penn State teams this weekend.

After the football team’s last-second loss to Michigan State Saturday night, the field hockey team fell in its Big Ten Tournament tilt with Michigan 1-0 from Ralph Young Field on Sunday in East Lansing.

It was a back-and-forth matchup all afternoon, but neither team was able to generate offense as both goaltenders kept the opposing offense at bay. Penn State’s Jenny Rizzo made five saves on the day and Michigan’s Sam Swenson made nine saves.

That breakthrough finally came with just under six minutes to go when Esther de Leijer gave the Wolverines the lead when she snuck one past Rizzo.
