Penn State had a tradition for 125 years, then ended it in 2012. It had a good reason to change things, but according to head coach James Franklin, it now has a good reason to revert to how things used to be.
The program announced Thursday that it will be removing player's last names from the back of their game day jersey, something former head coach Bill O'Brien implemented in 2012 to honor players who stayed through the Jerry Sandusky scandal and resulting NCAA sanctions.
"In 2012, for the first time in the program's history, names adorned the back of the jersey to forever identify the men who stayed loyal, sacrificed & chose to play for this institution during the most difficult of times," Franklin said in a statement.
