Penn State DE Garrett Sickels embracing starting role

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Austin Johnson needed a few seconds to think through the pecking order when it comes to ranking Penn State’s fastest defensive linemen.

He started with redshirt junior defensive end Evan Schwan, then proceeded to rattle off the names of senior end Carl Nassib, senior tackle Anthony Zettel and redshirt freshman end Torrence Brown. Still, Johnson wasn’t too sure about his own assessment.

“Maybe? Something like that?” Johnson, a 6-foot-4, 323-pound defensive tackle, said before breaking into laughter. “Sideline-to-sideline that’s all me that’s all me, all 320 pounds of me.”

Through four games Penn State’s defense, surrendering 281 yards per game, is ranked 15th in the Football Bowl Subdivision.
