Penn State, Bob Shoop try to avoid court battle over buyout, settle issue through mediation

WILLIAMSPORT -- Penn State and former defensive coordinator Bob Shoop have agreed to try resolving their buyout issue before heading to a potential drawn-out court battle.

As a result, U.S. Middle District Judge Robert D. Mariani on Friday named a mediator and directed that mediation to take place within 60 days from Sept. 8.

Penn State sued Shoop, claiming he owes $891,856, and breached his contract when he resigned on Jan. 10, 2016.

He signed a contract the next day to be the defensive coordinator at the University of Tennessee with a base pay of $245,000 and an annual supplemental pay of $905,000.
