Penn State headed east this weekend to kick off its conference schedule at Rutgers in a three-game set. The Nittany Lions were coming off a series win over NJIT, but could not make it two in a row, as the blue and white fell to the Scarlet Knights 4-1 and 1-0, before salvaging the series finale 9-3.
Inconsistent pitching was not a problem for Penn State, with all three starters pitching well, and the bullpen making short work of the remaining innings. The issue for the blue and white lied on the offensive side of the ball, particularly the inability to bring base runners across home plate.
