Zech McPhearson was the 129th-best recruit in the country, and the sixth-best in the state of Maryland coming to Penn State out of Riverdale Baptist School, also the home of Tariq Castro-Fields. After redshirting in 2016, McPhearson appeared in six games last season on both defense and special teams, breaking up a pass against Northwestern and making tackles against Akron, Georgia State, Northwestern, and Nebraska. In the season finale versus Maryland, the redshirt-freshman had two tackles and recovered his first career fumble, forced by older brother Josh. In the 2018 Blue and White Game, coach James Franklin declared McPhearson the player of the game as he had two tackles and three pass deflections.
