Penn State’s lone commitment in the class of 2023, Virginia tight end Mathias Barnwell, has opened up his recruitment. He announced his decision Wednesday afternoon on Twitter.
The Riverbend (Fredericksburg, VA) standout committed to the Nittany Lions back in early June. Currently regarded as a tight end, it’s likely that the 6-foot-5, 240-pound sophomore would end up on the offensive line in the future.
While the decommitment is an early hit for the 2023 recruiting class, it probably shouldn’t be a surprise considering how early he committed. That being said, it appears Barnwell still is high on the Nittany Lions and that James Franklin and company have plenty of time to bring him back into the fold.
