Starting with the 2024 season, the College Football Playoff (CFP) is going to expand from the 4-team setup that has been in place since 2014, to a 12-team format. There are a bunch of nuances of auto-bids, seeding based on conference championships, etc. but the long and short of it is that we’re going to go from a 3-game playoff to an 11-game playoff.
Here’s how it used to break down:
- The top 4 teams at the end of the season made the playoffs
- The 1-seed played the 4-seed in one of the semifinals, and the 2-seed played the 3-seed in the other semifinal
- The two semifinal winners played in the national championship
So 4 teams, 3 games.
