No. 18 Penn State hockey fell 3-1 to No. 4 Minnesota on Friday night in the conference opener for both teams. The Nittany Lions scored the first goal but were hampered by six penalties and a lack of consistent offensive pressure.
First Period
Both offenses were rather sluggish to start the game, with both teams failing to convert on a power play opportunity. Penn State’s forecheck gave Minnesota some fits and forced defensive zone turnovers, but the Nittany Lions could not capitalize. Reese Laubach was called for tripping at the 17:11 mark of the period, giving the Gophers a chance to take the lead into the intermission.
