Jim Harbaugh is nothing if not a strategic iconoclast. He's so un-trendy that he's not only eschewing the offensive attacks of today, he's reverted back to the age in which he played for Bo Schembechler at Michigan three decades ago.
In an era of various spread-option and zone-read offenses featuring abundant helpings of run-pass option, Harbaugh is running the musty old I-formation. A lot. In the Wolverines' 27-20 overtime win at Indiana on Saturday, they lined up in variations of I-formation about half the time with two tight ends in a healthy portion of those. They even ran inverted Wishbone on a couple of snaps.
