Penn State was too good for its postseason tournament last season.

Yes, that’s a sentence that goes against the attitude a typical Penn Stater has toward the university’s basketball program, with that mindset typically varying between one of self deprecation and borderline-embarrassing indifference. But it’s true.

The Nittany Lions ran rampant through the NIT. They were a club with more than enough talent to earn an NCAA Tournament berth.

But Penn State ran into a number of roadblocks that derailed those aspirations. One of the most important limitations: A weak nonconference slate that did Pat Chambers’ team absolutely no favors.
