Since the 2007-08 season, the National Hockey League has been marketing its product by playing hockey games outdoors in stadiums across America.
These outdoor games, played as either the annual Winter Classic or as part of the NHL's Stadium Series which originated with three games in 2014, have drawn fans and attention to hockey across the country.
More recently, hockey fans in Pennsylvania have been clamoring for the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers — bitter rivals since both teams entered the NHL in 1967 — to play in an outdoor game at Penn State's Beaver Stadium, a neutral venue that would presumably make for a split crowd and lively atmosphere.
