Penn State is known as one of the perennial athletic institutions in the country, but probably not for the reasons you think. Usually, the football team has the most hype when it comes to winning a national championship, but what happens to the athletic program as a whole when the one team everyone follows week in and week out has an underwhelming year?
The history of the Penn State athletic program dates all the way back to Nov. 5 1886, when the football team defeated Bucknell by a score of 54-0. Of course, a lot has changed since then; the enrollment has increased from 167 to 98,783, and the athletic program has expanded from just one team to 31.
