The phrase “next man up” has been said so many times by the BYU football team this year that everyone is getting sick of it, even though it’s still accurate.
With Cougar junior Tanner Mangum done for the year with an Achilles injury and sophomore Beau Hoge still not ready for duty because of his own injury issues, BYU turned to a true freshman in Joe Critchlow for Friday night’s game at UNLV.
Critchlow is just the fifth true freshman QB to start at BYU, joining a pair of familiar names in that select group.
The most recent was Tanner Mangum, who started as a true freshman in 2015.
