Among the numerous student organizations at Penn State, the Penn State Karate Club distinguishes itself as a place where students can learn self-defense skills while also building confidence, discipline and camaraderie.
Established in 1972, the PSKC is one of the oldest university-based martial arts programs in the United States.
Rooted in tradition, the PSKC practices the Okinawan Isshinryu style of karate. Isshinryu was founded in 1954 by Master Tatsuo Shimabuku in Okinawa, Japan. The term Isshinryu translates to “One Heart Way.”
The Okinawan masters in Japan have great respect for the PSKC, visiting the club every so often to guide the students.
