Penn State football will return to tradition by removing players’ names from the back of its jerseys for the upcoming season, the program announced today.
The nameless jerseys had been a tradition at Penn State for 125 years prior to the 2012 season, when former coach Bill O'Brien added the names to recognize players who chose to stay on the team after the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.
"In 2012, for the first time in the program's history, names adorned the back of the jersey to forever identify the men who stayed loyal, sacrificed and chose to play for this institution during the most difficult of times," coach James Franklin said in a statement.
