UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State has put together one of the top-ranked recruiting classes in the nation.
And it’s done it without a single player from Western Pennsylvania.
Nittany Lions assistant head coach Terry Smith suggested Wednesday that that reflects something of a down year in the region.
“We offered one kid, then we just made the decision to not go full-fledged on him,” said Smith, formerly the coach at Gateway. “There weren’t many others that we paid much attention to.”
He didn’t identify the player in whom Penn State had interest, and there clearly were some highly regarded talents from Western Pennsylvania who signed with other programs Wednesday.
