There's more to the numbers than meets the eye

STOCKTON — Sometimes the numbers tell the story. Sometimes they don’t.

The number of points the Delta College football team has surrendered through three games this season is staggering — 131— but there are reasons why the Mustangs are 64th out of 69 teams statewide in points allowed.

Take last Saturday: Delta had a 14-point lead over Santa Rosa, ranked No. 1 in the NorCal Northern Division, before the turnover bug bit. The defense faced short fields and at least 30 extra snaps as a result of six turnovers, and the Bear Cubs pulled away, 55-23. The previous week, DeAnza scored 48 points, though Delta prevailed in a shootout, 53-48.
