Pacific pummels Pomona-Pitzer

STOCKTON — It didn’t take long for University of the Pacific’s nationally ranked men’s water polo team to impose its will on the determined but outmanned Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer.

Engin Ege Colak scored nine seconds into the match for the No. 5 Tigers, who broke it open in the third quarter and won 16-2 on Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament at Pacific’s Chris Kjeldsen Pool. The Tigers (20-5) will meet No. 8 UC Davis in the quarterfinals at 5 p.m. Thursday in Los Angeles.

Despite the lopsided score, the defense was the story for Pacific, which had 18 steals and foiled most of Pomona-Pitzer’s scoring opportunities.
