STOCKTON — An easy-going, Sunday afternoon baseball game on Mother’s Day turned into a fierce battle for host Delta College, and narrowly avoided being ousted from the 2018 California Community College Athletic Association Super Regional playoffs at Nick Cecchetti Field.
The top-seeded Mustangs won the deciding Game 3 of their series with No. 11 San Mateo, 8-7, after taking a 6-0 lead into the sixth inning. San Mateo had the potential game-tying run in scoring position in the sixth and eighth innings but failed to bring those runners home.
In the ninth inning and the Mustangs leading by a run, Delta relief pitcher Garrett Munn induced a ground-out and a flyout before striking out San Mateo’s final batter looking.
