In Delta’s case, that would be sophomore Amanda Valentine and on Tuesday she did not disappoint. Facing a shootout in the second-round CCCAA Northern California Regional contest with visiting Fresno City College, Valentine blocked the first Rams shot and one more with a third bouncing off the crossbar on the way to a 3-1 win in penalty kicks for Delta after the teams tied 0-0 through regulation and overtime.
“Defense wins championships,” Valentine said. “After the first block I knew the rest was fine.”
The Mustangs will play Diablo Valley in a semifinal contest on Saturday at a time and place to be determined.
