It would only seem fitting that the Delta College baseball team would meet a familiar foe on the final day of the CCCAA State Championship tournament in Fresno.
For the second time in two days, the Mustangs played Big 8 Conference rival Sacramento City in the championship round Monday. Delta, which had beaten Sac City on Sunday, got a surprise when the Panthers won 6-3, forcing a second and deciding game in the afternoon.
Delta fell behind in the final game 5-2 before the Mustangs roared back with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. But it was defense and relief pitching that did the job, and the Mustangs triumphed 7-5 to win the state title at John Euless Ballpark.
