STOCKTON - A big step toward winning the West Coast Conference is defeating the defending champion, but the Pacific women's basketball team was unable to do that against BYU, losing 68-55 Saturday at Spanos Center.

With its defeat, the Tigers now share first place atop the WCC standings with BYU. The Tigers (7-8, 3-1 WCC) were repeatedly unable to deny the Cougars (9-6, 3-1) in the paint, and a crowd of 447 saw them pay the price under the basket and scored a season-low 55 points.

"Some of our adjustments worked, but we need to be able to hit a few threes from the outside," said Pacific coach Bradley Davis, whose team was outscored 32-8 in the key.
