Longtime Pacific basketball coach dies at 78

Dick Fichtner, a coach for 10 years with the Pacific men’s basketball program from 1973-1983, has died. He was 78.

Fichtner was an assistant coach on the 1978-1979 Pacific team that won the Pacific Coast Athletic Association championship, and took over the head coaching position for Stan Morrison in 1980. In three years at the helm, Fichtner compiled a 36-49 record.

Tom Stubbs, a former Pacific baseball coach and associate athletic director who served as interim athletic director twice, last saw Fichtner about a month and a half ago. Fichtner and former Pacific golf coach Glen Albaugh visited Stubbs after he had hip surgery.
