Legendary women's volleyball coach John Dunning announced his retirement Monday after 32 years as a collegiate coach.
Dunning, who has earned five NCAA national championships, including two at Pacific, told his players about his decision during a team meeting at Stanford, where he has coached the past 16 seasons.
"It was really hard," Dunning said by telephone shortly after the meeting. "We had a talk about the end of the season, which was amazing and I had to tell them I was retiring. I started crying and couldn't do it, so it was really tough."
Dunning's final season ended with his fifth national title and third at Stanford.
