STOCKTON — Cheyenne Washington knew it as soon as it left her bat.
After fouling off pitches in a 3-2 count, the freshman slugger connected for a rocket of a three-run homer in the fifth inning, provided much of the offensive spark the Delta college softball team needed Saturday afternoon at Bucky Layland Softball Complex.
The Mustangs went on to beat Porterville 5-1, sweeping the opening round of the Northern California Regional Playoffs. Delta (34-5) will advance to next week’s Super Regionals, tentatively set for May 10.
After Friday’s 3-2 victory, Delta head coach Jim Fisher said he wanted to see better swings come Saturday.
