Delta builds big lead, holds off Fresno

STOCKTON – The Delta Mustangs did everything the higher seed is expected to do.

They came out strong, took control and won the first game. But a late rally by Fresno City was a reminder that this series is not over.

The Mustangs led by as many as seven runs and won 9-5 on Friday in the first round of the Northern California Regional playoffs at Delta’s Bucky Layland Softball Complex. The second game is noon today and, if necessary, a third game will follow at 2 p.m.

Seventh-seeded Delta (25-15) led 8-1 after two innings and 9-2 after the fourth.
