Greg Zavala's presence has pervaded the Stockton and San Joaquin County wrestling communities for more than four decades.
As a high school coach, his presence was felt well before he stepped onto campus.
Chavez coach Charles Carnahan wrestled for Zavala at Franklin in the early 1980s.
Before Zavala showed up, his wrestlers were required to have run 2 miles and 100 bleachers.
There was no assistant coach enforcing the workout. It was an honor system.
But Zavala, a Tracy native whose family moved to Stockton in 1965, commands so much respect that no one dared fake it.
