Washington turns talent drain into defensive gain

Southern Mississippi enters Saturday’s Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl against Washington averaging a robust 40.6 points per game on offense. That’s good for 11th nationally.

At first blush, that seems encouraging for the Golden Eagles.

Now, the bad news. Only once this season has a Washington opponent performed up to its scoring average. And in most cases, teams score 10 to 20 fewer points per game against a relentless UW defense that emerged as the best in the Pac-12 in 2015.
