LOS ANGELES -- USC coach Clay Helton arrived home Tuesday night to some surprise news from his wife.
"There's a lot of reports out there that you're going to name a quarterback after the spring game," Helton said she told him. "And I go, 'Really? I don't think I meant that.'"
On Tuesday, Helton indicated he would name a starter following the spring game if it was obvious there was a big separation, but has repeatedly said the the competition involving favorite Max Browne, Sam Darnold and, to a less respect, Jalen Greene, is very close.
Several media outlets misinterpreted what he said -- reporting he planned to name a starter next week -- which led Helton, unprompted, to clarify the situation after practice Thursday.
