Stanford's first winner of the Outland Trophy, which is given to the best interior lineman in college football, Garnett also was voted the best offensive lineman in the Pac-12 by the conference's defensive linemen. His bone-crushing blocking helped allow running back Christian McCaffrey post one of the most prolific seasons in college football history.
