OTTAWA — The old saying goes that the “goaltender stood on his head” after a strong performance in the net.
In the case of Matt O’Connor, he literally did this summer.
The Senators’ top prospect in the net changed his routine and part of what was instituted into his program by strength and conditioning coach Chris Schwarz was a gymnastics program.
Yes, that really included head stands.
The 6-foot-6, 24-year-old O’Connor is willing to do anything to improve as he prepares to take part in his second training camp with Ottawa next week at the Canadian Tire Centre, so he thought he’d give the gymnastics a whirl after spending last year with the club’s AHL affiliate in Binghamton.
