ST. JOHN’S, N.L. - If the job as the Senators No. 1 goalie was up for grabs, it could be said that Andrew Hammond reached higher than Craig Anderson this weekend.
The night after Anderson surrendered five goals on 30 shots in a Canadian Tire Centre loss to the Buffalo Sabres, Hammond turned in a exceptional performance against the Carolina Hurricanes at Mile One Centre Sunday.
The author of last season’s miracle run to the playoffs, Hammond made 34 saves in a 2-1 loss to the Hurricanes.
The wining goal was scored with 4:36 left in the third by defenceman Jaccob Slavin, who found an opening with a close-in shot just under the bar.
