The Ottawa Senators have traded the 42nd overall pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft to the Los Angeles Kings, in exchange for the 49th, and 136th overall selections in this year’s draft.
With the pick, the Kings selected centre Francesco Pinelli of the Kitchener Rangers.
The move comes as something of a surprise, with Senators general manager Pierre Dorion telling TSN 1200 last night that he foresaw the team keeping both of their second round choices, unless a team offered them a deal that provided immediate help to their NHL roster.
Given the Senators’ propensity to make “off the board” picks, it stands to reason that they like a player that could be there at 49, while also adding a fifth-rounder they lacked.
