Ottawa Senators goalie Craig Anderson named NHL's first star of week

EDMONTON — It was a difficult week off the ice and Craig Anderson is getting accolades for the way he performed through tough circumstances.

Coming off a 37-save performance in a 3-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers Sunday night at the Rogers Place Arena, Anderson was named the first star of the week by the NHL Monday at noon.

Anderson posted back-to-back shutouts — including 22 saves in a victory over Vancouver — last Tuesday to start the club’s three-game Western road swing that wrapped up with the win in Edmonton.

He left the team Wednesday after learning his wife Nicholle had been diagnosed with cancer but returned Saturday night at her urging to suit up against the Oilers after the club lost backup Andrew Hammond to a groin injury.
