On May 25, 2017, the Ottawa Senators came within a Game 7 double-overtime goal from advancing to the Stanley Cup Final for the second time in franchise history.
Led by superstar captain Erik Karlsson and a core of talent featuring forwards Mark Stone, Kyle Turris, Mike Hoffman, and Derick Brassard, the Senators seem poised to become a serious Cup contender following several years of rebuilding.
Nearly two years later, however, the Senators are mired at the bottom of the overall standings. Karlsson, Stone, Turris, Hoffman, and Brassard have been traded away.
