Is retirement around the corner for Senators' Chris Phillips?

TAMPA - The clock could be ticking on Chris Phillips' NHL career.

Senators GM Bryan Murray told TSN 1200 while the veteran defenceman has been working hard to try to return from off-season back surgery, his career may be over. Phillips, 37, has been on the ice for the last three weeks and has been working hard but it doesn't sound like he's making much in the way of progress.

An alternate captain, Phillips hasn't suited up since last January when he beat former captain Daniel Alfredsson's record for 1,179 career games in an Ottawa uniform. Coming into the season, the Senators were hopeful Phillips would be able to come back and though they haven't thrown in the towel, it doesn't sound good.
