While Toronto Maple Leafs fans spend the dog days of summer gleefully counting the days to the debut of newly signed free-agent John Tavares on October 3, it has been a far more difficult off-season for faithful fans of the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens.
Both the Canadiens and Senators finished among the bottom four in the NHL standings in 2017-2018, and look toward the upcoming campaign with tempered expectations.
Shattered relationships with team captains entering the final year of their respective contracts, an inability to attract top-flight free-agent talent, and questionable trades are just a few of the things that Canadiens and Senators have in common.
