FOXBOROUGH, MASS. - Brad Marchand got the book thrown at him and as a result he'll play the role of spectator at the Winter Classic.
The Boston Bruins winger was given a three game suspension after hearing with the NHL’s department of player safety Wednesday following an ugly low-bridge hit on Ottawa Senators defenceman Mark Borowiecki in the Bruins' 7-3 victory Tuesday at the TD Garden.
Marchand, who was suspended for five games in 2012 for a similar hit on Vancouver Canucks defenceman Sami Salo, put himself in a vulnerable position when he decided to submarine Borowiecki with just over 11 minutes left in the first.
