NHL blackouts granted class-action status - Gary Bettman (C) College Player

Whether or not the NHL can continue to blackout games based on where a given viewer is watching a given game is being challenged in court.

U.S District Court, to be exact, as granted by Judge Shira Scheindlin. In short, along with the NHL's, the MLB's anti-trust exemption is being challenged in court with class-action status stating that it does not apply to television broadcasting rights. If the plaintiff wins, all teams would be free to offer their services a la carte to all potential viewers as opposed to today's grouped packages and blackouts based on proximity to a participating team.
