AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The University of Texas will start selling beer and wine to fans at home football games beginning this fall.
Beer and wine were already sold at other sporting events, but Royal-Memorial Stadium had remained alcohol-free. The school announced the change Wednesday.
Athletic director Steve Patterson proposed alcohol sales last year, but the plan was nixed by former Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa.
New President Greg Fenves said on his first day on the job that he supported alcohol sales at football, and first-year Chancellor Bill McRaven agreed.
The Longhorns' first home game next season at the stadium with a capacity of 100,000 people is Sept.
