The NBA has shifted to a predominately offensive league. It is about putting the ball in the basket. Players who cannot are being phased out of the league.
Offense is the new defense.
With the increased emphasis on the 3-point shot, teams must focus on being able to score. Low-scoring games are a thing of the past. Great defense is keeping a team around 100 points, meaning a team has to be able to score more than 100 points per game.
With that shift in philosophy, teams are placing a premium on the scoring point guard.
