The Orlando Magic fell short of their playoff expectations this past season, but they have their sights set on the same goal under Frank Vogel next year. For that to happen, they're looking to improve their roster through trades and free agency this offseason. Here's all the latest Magic news and rumors you need to know:
Orlando "unlikely" to go after Howard
Dwight Howard is expected to opt out of his contract with the Rockets this summer, and he has expressed a lot of interest in returning to play for the Magic. However, Orlando doesn't share the same interest, according to the Orlando Sentinel:
Most league observers expect former Magic center Dwight Howard to opt out of his Houston Rockets contract and become a free agent this summer. But it’s highly unlikely that the Magic would pursue Howard unless he seeks a one-year deal for reasonable money.
Howard averaged 13.7 points and 11.8 rebounds per game last season.
Magic aiming high
While Orlando will pass on Howard, they are aiming to make a big splash in free agency. Vogel told SiriusXM NBA Radio that he feels the team and organization are "capable of making a big free agent acquisition this summer," and they're certainly going to try.
Obviously, what qualifies as a "big" signing is left up to interpretation. For a team that needs shooting, don't be surprised to see them go after Washington SG Bradley Beal, Hawks PF Al Horford and Hornets SG Nicolas Batum.
