The Orlando Magic currently hold the No. 6 and No. 25 overall picks in the first round of the NBA Draft, and they have a need they plan to address at the point guard position.
In a class loaded with point guards at the top, there's a great chance the Magic could fill that need with the first pick. However, they have been heavily linked to Duke SF Jayson Tatum at No. 6. If they take him or another non-point guard at that spot, they could target Oklahoma State's Jawun Evans with the No. 25 pick, according to FanSided's Ryan Doyle.
With the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Evans was a dual threat as a scorer and a distributor. With his 19.2 points per game and 6.4 assists per game, Evans could be a staple in Orlando’s rotations as early as next year.
There is still work to do if Evans wants to solidify an early role with the Magic. He needs to work on his outside shot. Evans can slash and blow by opposing guards. But without an outside shot, he will become a predictable player on offense.
Last season, the point guard position was a huge problem for the Magic. Elfrid Payton played poor defense and D.J. Augustin did not play up to his new four-year contract. With a new front office, the Magic may be looking to clean house and find other options at point guard.
Orlando is in the midst of overhauling their front office, so they may want to give Payton another year to evaluate him. It remains to be seen how they value the current players on their roster.
Evans averaged 19.2 points with 6.4 assists and 1.8 steals per game last season.
