The San Antonio Spurs surprisingly renounced their rights to Jonathon Simmons yesterday, making him an unrestricted free agent. They were trying to re-sign him after, but talks broke down shortly after they renounced him, after which Simmons started negotiating with other teams.
A true lockdown defender, Simmons had a breakout postseason, leading the Spurs in points per game after Kawhi Leonard went out with his ankle injury in the Western Conference Finals. That caused many around the league to view him as a prime candidate for an increased role, which San Antonio wasn't able to give him.
Simmons averaged 6.2 points per game in 17.8 minutes per game off the bench this year but upped his game in the playoffs, averaging 10.5 points in 20.4 minutes per game.
