With new captain USWNT ready to face Colombia in Orlando

The U.S. women’s national team will continue preparing for the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics on Monday night in Orlando.

The Americans will face off against Colombia for the first of two friendlies this week, a unique setup that will allow coach Vlatko Andonovski to begin testing his group for the year’s upcoming tournaments.

For Andonovski, the matches offer an important opportunity after playing only nine matches in 2020. And the team will move forward with a new player wearing the captain’s armband — defender Becky Sauerbrunn.

Sauerbrunn’s new position as captain was announced Sunday. The defender has worn the captain’s armband for games before and held the title alongside Carli Lloyd in 2016.
