Mount Dora’s boys weightlifting team powered its way to a historic second place finish in Friday’s Class 1A state championship competition.
The Hurricanes totaled 30 points to outscore every team except Keystone Heights (37) in a meet held at Port St. Joe High School. The finish marked the first time a Lake County team has finished in the top two in the FHSAA boys weightlifting finals, which date to 1974.
Mount Dora was led by two weight class winners. Zack Jeckovich totaled 620 pounds with his bench press and clean and jerk lifts to win the 219-pound weight class.
