A request by players on the U.S. women’s national team for U.S. Soccer to make up the discrepancy in World Cup payments would “likely bankrupt” the federation, president Cindy Parlow-Cone said in a press conference call Tuesday.
The request is part of continued conversations between the two parties after a group of U.S. women’s national team players filed a lawsuit in March 2019 claiming they received less compensation than the men’s team due to gender discrimination.
In the suit, the players requested more than $66 million in damages under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Pay Act.
