On Tuesday, the United States, Canada, and Mexico announced their joint bid to host the World Cup in 2026. If successful, the bid would mark the first time that three nations hosted the tournament. It will also be the first time that the 48-team format, recently announced by FIFA, will be used.
"This is a milestone day for U.S. Soccer and for CONCACAF,” Sunil Gulati, the President of U.S Soccer, said at the joint press conference announcing the bid. “We gave careful consideration to the prospect of bidding for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and ultimately feel strongly this is the right thing for our region and for our sport.
